This is a virtual gift. No packaging, no carbon footprint.

It won't grow a giant beanstalk, but it might just save the rainforest.

Inga is undeniably a ground-breaking crop. It helps local people to nurture their soils, grow crops to eat and sell, and stop vast areas of rainforest from being destroyed. For rainforest communities, it is fast becoming a way to earn a sustainable income that works with the forest, not against it.

Receive a downloadable Incredible Inga certificate for this virtual gift to give to a friend or family member after checkout.

This virtual gift represents a donation to our rainforest conservation work and could help create a sustainable livelihood for a farmer and their family in the Peruvian Amazon.

A ground-breaking crop that might just save the rainforest

Inga is the best nitrogen-fixing, phosphorus-restoring, shade-providing, firewood-yielding crop you’ve never heard of. It is also providing Awajún communities with a sustainable way to make an income that works with, not against, their forest.

In 2016, Cool Earth sponsored Marin Orrego and Felix Iván Mejía Pérez to travel from Urakuza to visit the Inga Foundation in Honduras. They returned enthused and full of knowledge of how inga can be grown to make a real difference to share with the wider community.

Once Marin and Felix demonstrated that maintenance of alleys of inga plants was easy, that other lucrative crops could be grown alongside it, and harvesting could be done close to home, it quickly became a popular source of food and income for the communities.

Since then, inga has thrived in the optimum temperature and rainfall of this part of the Peruvian Amazon, helping restore degraded soils and top them with a healthy layer of organic matter. The way the forest floor should be.

With the potential to improve food security, provide a reliable source of income and reduce slash and burn agriculture, we look forward to the impact of inga continuing to grow.
