Buzzing to help people change their lives and protect their forest?

Distributing beehives in local communities helps people to generate an income that is dependent on healthy rainforest. It’s the sweetest win-win. Incentivising the control of fires that would have normally cleared ground for farming helps to preserve the surrounding forest.

Receive a downloadable Brilliant Beehive certificate to give to a friend or family member after checkout.

This virtual gift represents a donation to our rainforest conservation work, and could help provide a sustainable income for a community in one of our partnerships.

When it comes to saving the rainforest, it’s often the smallest choices that make the biggest changes

Forty years ago, the communities around Mount Namuli lived in balance with the mountain and its wildlife-rich forests. Today poverty, extreme weather and a growing population have placed new pressures on people and forest.

With limited livelihood alternatives, local people use unsustainable agricultural techniques, and, although potatoes grow well in these high altitude areas and fetch a high price at the market, that income comes at a great cost for rainforest.

That’s why Cool Earth partnered with local expert organisation Legado to develop sustainable agricultural practices, beekeeping and local leadership that aim to diversify income streams, empower local leadership and help preserve remaining rainforest.

In the past, the collection of wild honey meant the physical destruction of the colony, as well as the surrounding trees. Now, things are looking up for the smallest members of our Mozambique partnership.

Today, by reducing the use of fire, local people are protecting the bees’ homes and food sources As a sweet reward, local people are producing honey to sell and becoming financially resilient. Local communities are harnessing the potential bees have to offer and earning a living too. Cool Earth supporters have funded training for beekeepers, providing them with technical skills that will see them reaping the rewards with harvests of this sustainable honey.
